The cost of Sports: Nigeria to spend over 6 billion on Football in 2018

The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) budget on its activities for 2018 will cost N6.4 billion (N6,382,500,310), N2billion more than what is spent on the medical needs of victims of the humanitarian crisis in the North-East region of the Country.

The approval was finalized last October by the NFF General Assembly held in Jos, Plateau State.

“The Federation’s total budget for year 2018 activities is the sum of N6,382,500,310.00. The guaranteed revenues from sponsors and Government subvention is the sum of N3,062,500,310.00, leaving a shortfall of the sum of N3,320,000,000.00, which the Federation has to work to augment through sponsorships and special interventions.”

According to Sports Minister, Solomon Dalung, N3 billion will be spent by the Super Eagles of Nigeria for Russia 2018 World Cup kickstarting in June.

He iterated that the willingness of FIFA to make available N900million, Football sponsors would raise N600 million while the Federal Government would splash N2 billion.

He also assured players of prompt payment before the tournament begins, to boost morale and ensure effective performance.

“By March, we intend to start paying the players their allowances, camping allowances upfront. Now, that will go a long way to boost the morale of the players and confidence too.”

OLYMPIC GAMES

The Winter Olympics Games, which will hold between 9-25, February, in Pyeongchang, South Korea, will cost Nigeria about 43 million.

In Olympics games, winners are rewarded with medals of Gold, Silver, and Bronze, with no monetary incentives given.

It is the participating’s Country’s federations that reward winners with cash prizes and other bonuses.

The 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil saw Singapore as the highest cash bonuses per gold medal with $753,000, followed by Indonesia and Azerbaijan, with $383,000 and $255,000 respectively.

Unlike the Olympics, the World Cup reward teams with cash prizes. The participants of the 2018 World Cup will share $400 million, a 12% increase from the same tournament held in Brazil four years ago.

The last edition saw winner Germany pocket $35million, runner-up, Argentina received $25miilion, and third place Holland gets $22M, while host Country, Brazil finishing fourth got $20million.

Quarter-Finalist received $19M, Round-of-16 losers to which Nigeria was among gulped $9M and Group Stage losers received $8M.

This year tournament winner will receive $38M; Runners-Up $28M, third $24M, fourth $22M.

Quarter-finals losers get ($16M), Round-of-16 gets ($12M) and group stage losers pocket ($8M).

Meanwhile, In August 2017, the Minister of Health, Professor Isaac Adewole said the Government spends just over N4billion in providing relief materials, drugs, medical consumables, hospital equipment and on capacity building and deployment of volunteer health workers for victims of the insurgency in North-East.
